Why Help

Thank you for visiting this site.

We invite you to consider signing up as a supporting member of Orion The Hunters' Institute.

We are a 501 (c) (3) organization as recognized by the Internal Revenue Service so monetary contributions are tax deductible.

Orion is dedicated to the preservation of hunting as an important part of our North American conservation heritage. Our route to that goal is through teaching hunter ethics and expanding society's knowledge of the conservation legacy that was born in the embers of the hunter's fire. It is a proud legacy and it has filled an entire continent with wildlife. It is a legacy that also nurtures the spirit of the chase, keeping it alive in the hearts and minds of the millions who take to the field in each season of the hunt. Join us and be part of sustaining this awesome saga of the hunt.

What we do:

The following is from an email sent to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation from founder Jim Posewitz September 21, 2010:

In response to your September 17 email regarding conservation education and hunting heritage outreach I offer the following summary.  Orion appeared as the program in at least 20 events during 2009 in which audiences or students were addressed on a face to face personal basis.  We estimate the total attendance at those events to be somewhere in the vicinity of 2,750 individuals.  The range of these activities literally spanned a continent.  For example, we presented material as part of a snowshoe hike along the Continental Divide in Montana, to participating in a conservation leadership youth program in Maryland.  In all cases the story of the emergence of the North American Conservation Ethic through hunting was the heritage outreach theme.

In addition we also appeared on or were interview on hunting heritage issues by various news outlets in 2009.  They included but were not limited to: the Pittsburg Post Gazette, Big Sky Radio, New West Magazine, Montana Public Radio, and North Country Media.  I have no way of estimating the numbers reached through those outlets with any reliability, but they would be substantial.

Perhaps one of the most satisfying measure of impact is the recently released (Autumn 2010 Vol. 4, #3) Special Issue of The Wildlife Professional. This formal publication of the Wildlife Society addressed the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation - exclusively.  Three Orion past or present Orion board members have articles featured in that magazine.  When Orion was founded, with help and support from the RMEF, sixteen years ago the subject material has rarely if ever a topic of discussion among wildlife professionals.   Today, the subject material relative to our movement’s origin and history has risen high enough in importance to warrant the attention the Wildlife Society has just afforded it.  When you get a copy, check page 33 and you will note recognition of the RMEF as an example of leadership.
